Pizza, Plants and Poetry

Hello Families,

I can't think of a better way to start the week than pizza and math at Folino's!  We learned how math is used in the real world, solved math problems and enjoyed yummy pizza. All the proceeds of our field trip went to the 52 Kids Foundation; a foundation started by Folino's that covers school fees for children in Uganda who would otherwise not be able to attend school.  I was extremely proud of how the children represented RMCS.

This week we began a science unit about plants and pollination.  On Tuesday, we planted flower seeds and already had sprouts this morning!  We are very excited to be creating a second grade pollinator garden in the perennial garden at the entrance of the school. During this unit we will learn about plant parts, how seeds travel and the importance of pollination.  We are lucky to have two guest speakers next week teaching us about bees and Vermont native plants.  On May 23rd we will be going to the UVM Horticultural Farm to see pollination in action with their apple trees and blueberry bushes.

The children continue to write beautiful poetry.  This week they learned that there are many different structures in poetry-conversation, list, mask and riddle poems were some of the favorites.  We are planning a poetry celebration for June 4th (the day of the school picnic).  I will be in touch with more specifics soon.

Other Things to Ask Your Child About:

~Read, cover, remember, retell
~Measuring second graders

Have a great weekend!
Katie
